Typically, it’s a bride’s nightmare to have a rainy wedding day, but as a photographer – it’s my ideal! Despite it being mid August, Helen and Rowan pulled the short end of the straw as they woke up to a drizzly morning in Wiltshire. Making sure to pack my umbrella, I made my way to Helen’s home to get a good few snaps of her getting ready before meeting Rowan outside cottage where he stayed the night at the breathtaking venue of Stourhead.
Opened in the 1740s, The National Trust owned venue of Stourhead is a beautiful wedding location come rain or shine. Made up of the Palladian house, chalk downs, ancient woods, classical temples, mystical grottoes and a truly magnificent lake, the place is definitely a “living work of art” as reports say.
After the arrival of guests, we made our way to the Temple of Apollo where the ceremony would take place. Helen arrived shortly after, embracing the rain and looking stunning. The building was magnificent and intimate, leaving some guests outside in the rain making use of their umbrellas. The ceremony was short and sweet, and by the time the vows were spoken and confetti thrown, the clouds had rained themselves out and left behind the most beautiful lighting. After a champagne reception on the lawn and a couple of natural group photos, there was time to explore the grounds, take a walk down the meandering paths and discover the most magical works of nature. But first, poor Helen had to get down the hill barefoot to avoid slipping! Luckily, her new husband came to the rescue.
The sun came out on the short walk to the village hall nearby, where the rest of the day unfolded. Helen had decked out the hall with beautiful homemade crafts and succulents – including a gorgeous potted succulent wedding cake. Outside in the courtyard, a VW campervan cocktail bar quenched the guests’ thirst and went down a treat! After some fantastic food, the emotional speeches and the fabulous first dance, the party started. The elderly folk really shone on that dancefloor!
Stourhead was a spectacular venue that I loved working with. It’s full of surprises and the natural countryside setting made for brilliant lighting. Congratulations to Helen and Rowan on their perfect day.
We can’t thank you enough for your professionalism & incredibly friendly and relaxed way of working. You made the whole experience a delight and it’s a shame we are not getting married again because we would hire you 100 times over!
