One of the best things about weddings in the UK is how good we can be at mixing old and new. Traditions are fun, but making your wedding your own creates a memorable experience for everyone. There were certainly plenty of personal touches at Polly and Henry’s wedding, which took place on a beautiful, blue-skyed autumn day at Newhouse Estate in Wiltshire. It was my first time getting a chance to be the Newhouse Estate wedding photographer, so it was an exciting day for me too.

The excellent mix of young and old started with the old – very old, in fact, as Newhouse Estate is a Grade I listed Jacobean manor house, built over 400 years ago. It’s a stunning venue, and I was ready and waiting to capture the guests arriving down the tree-lined avenue. Polly arrived with her stepdad Nick, and her father then took her the rest of the way, escorting her down the aisle.

The ceremony was definitely one to remember. As well as lovely readings from Henry’s Grandmother, Polly’s sister (and bridesmaid) Ellie and another friend, the guests spent the duration of the ceremony sketching the people they were sat with. Polly’s mum, Sally, was the ring-bearer, so the whole ceremony was a family affair.

Hi Kerry,

Words cannot express how happy we feel looking through the gallery! Nearly wet ourselves laughing at some points and then welling up with happiness at others. You’ve captured everything as we remember it and more. You also made us look far more photogenic than we actually are. We watched the slideshow whilst listening to our wedding playlist and were totally transported back to New House.
Polly & Henry

Post-ceremony, it was back to tradition, with confetti as the newly married couple made their way outside. We took a trip around the estate in the bridal car and got a few photos along the way. Capturing the bridal party was a lot of fun, and made even better by the great light we had on a sunny day. They were a great bunch. Everyone decided to hop up onto a big log, and they were committed enough that they were willing to negotiate with some brambles to make it happen.

There was no classical English dining at the wedding breakfast – the guests (and me) all enjoyed a vegetarian Indian meal. It was definitely the best meal I’d had in a while! The meal was even served by servers in traditional Indian dress.

Speeches followed the meal, and I have to say that Polly’s was one of the best I’d heard all year. She brought everyone to tears! After a few other incredible speeches, Ellie and husband Nick (whose wedding I met the newlyweds at in winter 2017) hosted a fun quiz to get everyone talking. Not straying too far from tradition, though, cutting the cake and the first dance came next. Of course, Polly and Henry couldn’t just have a standard slow first dance, and they showed off the elaborate moves that they’re known for among their friends and family.

To end the evening, it was pizza and sparklers – a relaxed but fun way to round out the night. Polly and Henry’s wedding was incredible, and definitely one I would have been happy to attend as a guest too! I couldn’t have asked for a better couple, wedding or guests for my first time as a wedding photographer at Newhouse Estate. The venue is stunning and the perfect place to play with tradition.
